Pentecost - what a gift!

On this day of Pentecost, it is a moment to thank God for his indescribable gift of the Holy Spirit. The outpouring of the Paracletos (comforter, advocate, counsellor) was for the equipping and blessing of the believers. This gift was to give us the dynamic power we needed to share the Good News with a world longing for Hope and Love.

I don't believe that anything has changed, in terms of our reliance of the Spirit, and God's call for us to share the Gospel. It is my prayer that we could be filled with God's Spirit, in order to move into our troubled world with a clear message of grace.

“That’s when Peter stood up and, backed by the other eleven, spoke out with bold urgency: “Fellow Jews, all of you who are visiting Jerusalem, listen carefully and get this story straight.” – Acts 2:14 (The Message)

Prayer: Come Holy Spirit, Come!

A thought for Saint Patrick's Day

Most of us are aware that Patrick is the patron Saint of Ireland, and yet he was not technically Irish at all. He was born in Britain and taken captive by Irish raiders in the early 400's. After spending 6 years as a shepherd/slave in Ireland, he managed to escape back to his homeland. It was during this captivity that his relationship with God deepened to a very devout level, and this continued while he settled back in Britain.

However, God called Patrick back to serve the people of Ireland and so he went back there to share the Gospel with his previous enemies and captors. I can't think of a more profound example of God's love and grace than someone doing what Patrick did. It was his faith and love that continued to spread Christianity through Ireland, and so he is now revered as Saint Patrick. What a remarkable story!

"If I have any worth, it is to live my life for God." - Patrick

May the strength of God pilot us, may the wisdom of God instruct us, may the hand of God protect us, may the word of God direct us. Be always ours this day and for evermore. - Patrick

Magnetised by his goodness

"...many of us today, despite our familiarity with the Gospels, have imbibed an image of God which causes us to recoil from him rather than be magnetised by his goodness." - Joyce Huggett

The clearest way to identify our own image of God, would be to ask us all to draw a picture. Thankfully, I am not going to do that today, as my drawing leaves a lot to be desired. However, if I had asked you to draw a picture, what kind of image would you have put onto paper?

There is a sad reality amongst many church-goers, that very few of us can picture a smiling, gregarious Jesus. It is easier to think of an austere, bearded holy man, rather than allow ourselves to dwell on the idea that Jesus' magnetism drew thousands to his side. If the crowds had been afraid of him, they wouldn't have tried to get near him.

What do you think?

Hebrews 7:19 - But now we have confidence in a better hope, through which we draw near to God.

Start by listening to the stories of others

When Paul spoke to the learned people in Athens, he noted that they had built a statue “to an unknown God!” (Acts 17:23). They had done this as a safety measure,  just in case they had missed out on one of the many gods – they wanted to cover all their bases.

What I like about Paul's response to this statue is that he didn't dismiss their religious efforts outright, but rather used it as a bridge to the gospel of Jesus. We would be wise to use this approach even in our own lives as people are still seeking God today. Sadly they are not looking for God in the church, as the church may have failed a lot of people over the years.

However, it is good to remember that we are not offering them the church (per se), we are offering them Jesus.

Philip Moore offers us this advice: “Luke tells us to stop dismissing people’s stories and instead use them to point people towards Jesus. When we listen for ways to build bridges and point out Jesus where people have missed him, opportunities to call people to repentance are never far away. God is looking for tour guides – ordinary people like you and me.”

What do you make of this?

Whose story do you need to listen to today?

The Conspiracy of Kindness - changing the world by simply being kind

In his book, “The Conspiracy of Kindness,” Steve Sjogren makes an interesting observation. He states that less than 10% of Christians have the spiritual gift of evangelism, but around 90% have the gift of serving. He then goes on to speak about how we can witness to people through our acts of kindness and service.

I find this a very thought provoking point, especially in the light of sharing our faith. When we speak to congregation members about sharing our experience of Christ, many people glaze over and become very scared. All the excuses in the book are then put forward as to why they can't evangelise and I fully understand how intimidating it can be. However, every person has the ability to 'serve' someone else and to show kindness.

Imagine if we all ventured out into the world with the idea of sharing God's love with people through our actions and service?

In Acts 9 we read of a woman named Tabitha, who did exactly that. If you are interested in knowing more about her, then please check out our latest sermon on this remarkable woman.

Unblock our ears

"It is not given to men/women to make God speak. It is only given to them to live and to think in such a way that, if God's thunder should come, they will not have stopped their ears." - A.M. Hunter

Holy week is such a special time for the Christian community, but it is also a time where we pray that the Gospel reaches the hearts and ears of many other people.

It is my prayer that all of us would be mindful of the things that block the message of God reaching our inner being. God desires to speak to all of us  during this most sacred season.

Matthew 13:15 - "For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts and turn, and I would heal them."

I am thirsty

"Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfill Scripture he said, I am thirsty.” - John 19:28.

Have you ever wondered which Scripture Jesus was fulfilling in speaking these 3 words? Well, today is your lucky today. If we go back to Psalm 69:19-21, we will find an interesting reference. This is what it says:

"You know of my shame, scorn, and disgrace.
You see all that my enemies are doing.
20 Their insults have broken my heart,
    and I am in despair.
If only one person would show some pity;
if only one would turn and comfort me.
21 But instead, they give me poison (gall) for food;
they offer me sour wine for my thirst." - Psalm 69

I find this amazing. Not only is this a fulfillment of an ancient Psalm, but it also draws our attention to out own spiritual thirst. Jesus is the one who can satisfy this thirst in our hearts.

Go tell it on the Mountain

It is fascinating that we grow up singing songs, carols and hymns without fully knowing the story behind the words. A beautiful song like God Tell it on the Mountain is often sung during our Christmas worship services and although the words are easy enough to interpret, there is a remarkable story behind the words:

Go tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere;
go tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.

While shepherds kept their watching, Over silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens, There shone a holy light:

The hymn has its origins in the slave communities of the deep South in America. It is believed to have been composed by a humble slave who expressed his innermost thoughts in the words of a song. He would have been illiterate, yet would have held onto the incredible stories of Jesus’ birth, retold ever Christmas. With no opportunity of visiting Bethlehem in real life, he imagined a scene that transcended his own pain and suffering, and called others to pass on the message of hope and peace.

Many of the spiritual songs like Go Tell It On the Mountain could have been lost to our ears, if it weren’t for people like John Work and his son John Wesley Work Jnr. As a family, they were instrumental in saving numerous songs from this era and subsequently compiled many of the African-American spirituals into famous collections.

John Work was the driving force behind his local church choir and he used their remarkable singing gifts to keep the music alive. The choir boasted a number of singers from the Fisk Jubilee Singers, who helped spread the popularity of these songs as they were given opportunity to travel the world. If it weren’t for this miracle, Go Tell It On the Mountains may have remained a local song, sung only on a small farm in rural Tennessee.

As Jane Schroeder says, “it is the spirit of the words that provides the song's real power. As an unknown, humble slave revealed his own prayers and faith, he had little knowledge that the inspiration he felt—probably the only thing of value he ever possessed—would touch millions with the news not only on the mountain, but “over the hills and everywhere.”

We are challenged to remember that the Good News of Christ’s birth transcends our circumstances and the present sufferings we face. There is always Hope where Jesus is found.

Loyalty

Image result for Loyalty

At some point David felt as if there were no LOYAL people left in the world around him. He lamented:

"Help, Lord, for no one is faithful anymore; those who are loyal have vanished from the human race." (Psalm 12:1)

Of course, there were still many faithful and loyal people in his community - he just needed to be made aware of who they were. I think the same applies in our time. There are many good people out there and God is still calling each one of us to remain Faithful and Loyal to the Gospel and to each other. The following quote speaks volumes:

"Don’t' waste your time waiting and longing for large opportunities which may never come. But faithfully handle the little things that are always claiming your attention." - F.B. Meyer

Look for opportunities to show your faithfulness today.

Surround Sound

 Image result for sound
“Heard in full sound, the Gospels tell about the establishment of a theocracy, and portray what theocracy looks like with Jesus as king.” -  N. T. Wright

When we read through the Gospels we should hear the message of God in Surround Sound. It should speak 'loud and clear' to us of a different Kingdom - a new world and new Hope. So, in the light of the above quote, why don't you chew on these thoughts today:

1. A Theocracy is "a system of government in which priests rule in the name of God or a god."

2.  I am not sure that 'priests' (including myself in this) would do the best job at ruling nations. Certainly the history of Israel shows us that there were a few exceptions, but there were plenty of failures.

3. On the other hand, I don't think Priests would do 'worse' than present day Politicians! Maybe....maybe not?!

4.  Theocracy at its ideal would find Christ as King.

5. This Kingdom would be like no other we have even seen. Oh how we long for this 'New Jerusalem.'

Revelation 21
[ The New Heaven and the New Earth ] Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them..

Hard hearts

"God wants us to have soft hearts and hard feet. The trouble with so many of us is we have hard hearts and soft feet." - Jackie Pullinger

There is so much wisdom in this simple statement and yet the more I read it the more I am challenged! Jesus' feet were hard from the amount of walking he did and yet his heart remained 'soft' and compassionate towards those in need.

I pray that my heart will not turn hard and my feet become lazy in sharing the Gospel.

"   Mark 16:15 - "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

Time to sleep?

I have been teaching my students on the life of Benedict this week and I have loved being re-acquainted with this man of faith. He seemed to have a good grasp of the urgency of time and sharing the gospel while we can. He is known to have said the following:

"It is time now for us to rise from sleep."

"The sleepy like to make excuses."

It is a sad reality that the Church ends up moving into seasons of 'sleep', where we forget the urgency of the Gospel. These times of 'sleep' are different from planned 'rest' or 'sabbath', but are occasions when Christians have fallen asleep in the face of the Mission of God.

Where is your faith at the moment? Is it alive and awake or have you fallen asleep?

Mark 14:37 -"Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?"

Rejection or selection?

“There is no gift like being chosen, no pain like rejection. And when a reject is chosen by someone, a life gets changed.” – John Ortberg

I am sure that we all know the pain of rejection - or at least on some level. Perhaps we were desperate for a particular job or wanted to be chosen for a team, and we never made it. It is that feeling of rejection that can live with us for years, somethings leaving painful scars.

However, the GOODNEWS of Jesus Christ teaches us that God chose us, even before we were born. God loved us, even before we could do anything to deserve that love. Simply put - God wanted us on his team and so He chose us! How incredible is that?

Deuteronomy 7:6 - "For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure."

Lucky Friday the 13th?

There will be thousands of people stressing about the significance of Friday the 13th today. For me, it is just like another Friday, but in keeping with the date, I wanted to offer some wonderful verses that contain the number 13 in them. May you be blessed.

1 Corinthians 13:13 - And now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Psalm 13:5-6 - But I trust in your unfailing love;
my heart rejoices in your salvation.
I will sing the Lord’s praise,
for he has been good to me.

Mark 13:13 - "...but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved."

John 13:1 - "Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end."

Proverbs 13:13 - "Whoever scorns instruction will pay for it,
but whoever respects a command is rewarded."

Loved me back to Life

I know that it may be considered a crime to mention the lyrics of a Celine Dion song, but when I heard Loved me back to Life on the radio, I immediately thought of how the song could reflect a powerful testimony. Sure, this was not Celine's intention in writing the song, but is it not true that when Jesus is invited into our lives, that He loves us back to life? Often we feel spiritually empty, dry and dead, but the Spirit of God offers us life. Jesus loves us back to Life again.

Jesus promised that he came to reveal true life to us - "I have come that you may have life and have it in abundance." (John 10:10)

If you are feeling down and out at the moment, why don't you pause for a while and ask Jesus to 'love you back to life!?'

Finding love in a hopeless place

Now for some theology from one of Rihanna's latest songs...

"We found love in a hopeless place."

I am not sure she realises how close she is to the Gospel story. Almost all of the people that went in search of Jesus were feeling hopeless, helpless and desperate. They wanted something and in the end they found Someone - Jesus....who is "Love" personified.

I know that when I encountered Jesus and made my first public commitment to follow Him, I was in a place of hopelessness. I found LOVE in that place and Jesus has never left me.

May you find Jesus in the midst of your 'hopelessness'.
