Can it be?

It was on the 21st of May 1738 that Charles Wesley had his second "conversion" experience. We remember that at this stage he was already an Ordained Priest, but clearly something was missing in his faith. On Pentecost Sunday of that year (21st May) he encountered God in a way that changed his life.

We know that Charles went on to write over 6500 hymns and somehow managed to condense the complexities of theology into wonderful songs. These songs were used to bring about a revival in England and have continued to speak to believers for nearly 300 years.

One of my favourite hymns is "And Can it Be", which marvels at the grace of God. Here are the lyrics again:

"And can it be that I should gain
An interest in the Savior’s blood?
Died He for me, who caused His pain—
For me, who Him to death pursued?
Amazing love! How can it be,
That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me?

  1. ’Tis myst’ry all: th’ Immortal dies:
Who can explore His strange design?
In vain the firstborn seraph tries
To sound the depths of love divine.
’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
Let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father’s throne above—
So free, so infinite His grace—
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam’s helpless race:
’Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me!

    Long my imprisoned spirit lay,
    Fast bound in sin and nature’s night;
Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray—
    I woke, the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free,
I rose, went forth, and followed Thee.

    No condemnation now I dread;
    Jesus, and all in Him, is mine;
Alive in Him, my living Head,
    And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach th’ eternal throne,
And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Thought: Sometimes the truth of God's mercy seems unbelievable, yet we are all invited to receive His wonderful Grace.

God's grace helps us when we are in need

"Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong." - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

I am not so sure if I could be like Paul and 'boast' in my weaknesses, or even 'take pleasure' in them, but I think I understand his point.

Paul reminds us that when we are in difficult circumstances, we are a lot more inclined to reach out to God, and to remember that our weakness is a chance for God's Grace to work in our lives.

Are you going through a tough time at the moment?

If you are, then lean on God's grace and allow His strength to get you through this valley of difficulty.

The generous host

Psalm 23:5 - "He anoints my head with oil; my cup overflows."

The picture of a cup overflowing could be seen as the host being a little clumsy or even distracted, but it is meant to convey the complete opposite. God is being portrayed as being so gracious that he is not just giving the guests the bare minimum, but rather an abundance of his love and mercy. We are reminded today of God’s great generosity in giving the very best for us.

"Beloved, I will ask you now a question. How would it be with you if God had filled your cup in proportion to your faith? How much would you have had in your cup?” (Charles Spurgeon)

Prayer focus: Thank you Lord that you don't offer me your love in accordance with my merit, but rather according to your immeasurable mercy and grace.

When trying too hard doesn't get the desired result

There is an old saying that states: "If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again" (William Edward Hickson).

While this may be appropriate in certain fields, it is not the correct approach in all matters. Take for example, the Israelites. See what Paul writes about their efforts to try and try again.

"But the people of Israel, who tried so hard to get right with God by keeping the law, never succeeded.  Why not? Because they were trying to get right with God by keeping the law instead of by trusting in him. They stumbled over the great rock in their path.  God warned them of this in the Scriptures when he said,

“I am placing a stone in Jerusalem that makes people stumble,
a rock that makes them fall.
But anyone who trusts in him
will never be disgraced.”
- Romans 9:31-34

Thought: Lent should remind us that we are saved through the grace of Christ, not through our merits.

What if they knew?

What if everyone knew our secrets? How would you feel about that? It would be very intimidating for most of us, and I am sure we would struggle to look each other in the eye. Our mistakes and sins are not something we are very proud of. So, why is the Samaritan woman going around telling people that Jesus knows all about my life - he knows my secrets?!

John 4:29 - “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did", perhaps could be

I think it because she has got used to people knowing her story and rejecting her or shunning her. But now, she meets a religious man, who openly talks to her and doesn't shame her. Her statement in this verse, could easily be summed up: "Can you believe it? This holy man knows all about my secrets and yet he still wants to talk to me about faith and God. He didn't even look down at me but rather offered me 'Living Water.' Could he be the Messiah?"

Thought: God knows all about our past and our present struggles/sins, yet he still loves us. How remarkable is that?

Romans 5:8 - "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Love truly transforms lives, not fear!

One of the reasons I began to explore writing a blog (18 years ago) was because I realized that I couldn't "fit" all my thoughts and research into a 20-minute timeframe on a Sunday. I also wanted to allow the scripture passages to live with me longer than one day. And so, what I started out doing was drip-feeding my soul with scriptures, quotes and ideas that I hoped would help me to digest the essence of the Sunday theme.

I have not always followed this initial vision, but I would like to do more of that this week. I have really enjoyed taking time to ponder the story of the Samaritan woman (John 4) and it amazes me how much we still need to learn from this story, especially focusing on the actions of Jesus.

In an age of blatant hatred, unkindness, sectarianism, racism and all sorts of division, Jesus shows us what His Kingdom is truly about. Jesus crosses multiple barriers to share God's love and grace with a woman who was ostracized and written off by many. It is little wonder that she was astonished at his kindness and willingness to engage with her.

25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

Thought: The woman was not oblivious to what names people were calling her. She expected Jesus to treat her in the same way, but he did not. In order to bring her back to God, Jesus didn't need to shame her - he only needed to show her that she was 'seen and loved.' This was the catalyst to her conversion.

Makers of Peace

With all the war, rage and anger that is going on the world, I still believe that Jesus spoke clearly about Peace. Some Christians will try to justify violence by referring to a few verses in the New Testament, but on the whole, Jesus did not advocate for hatred and violence.

We must remember that Jesus had all the power in the world, so he could have destroyed the wicked and those who oppressed him, but he chose not to. When the religious leaders waged war on him, he did not call down thunder and lightning from heaven. Jesus came to establish a new kingdom, one that looked very different from the kingdoms of the world, and this is what makes it difficult to follow the teachings of Jesus.

‘Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God"

“Blessed [spiritually calm with life-joy in God’s favor] are the makers and maintainers of peace, for they will [express His character and] be called the sons of God." - Matthew 5:9 (Amplified Bible)

Matthew 5:43 - “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.

Thought: I would be wary of people who claim that we must wage war in the name of God. Jesus Christ does not command us to steal, kill and destroy. That is the work of the adversary (John 10:10).

Do you remember 'WHY' you are doing this?

As we move into the 3rd week of Lent, it is important for us to keep asking ourselves: "Why am I observing this season of prayer and fasting?" In order to try and give us some deeper insight, I am including a few quotes to remind us of the 'why.'

  • “During Lent, we are called to embrace the struggles that make us stronger.” — Jonathan Edwards
  • “Lent is a time for discipline, for confession, for honesty, not because God is mean or fault-finding or finger pointing but because he wants us to know the joy of being cleaned out, ready for all the good things he now has in store.” — N.T. Wright
  • “Lent affords us the opportunity to search the depths of our sin and experience the heights of God’s love.” — Chuck Colson
Thought: Do you still have your 'why' for this Lenten season?

Daniel 9:3 - So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting...

The Bruised Heart

"He will not shout or cry out or raise his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out." - Isaiah 42:2-3

I was really struck by these words of Isaiah - they refer to the attitude of the Servant of Lord towards bruised and broken people. It truly gives us insight into the nature of Jesus and how he seeks out the broken hearted.

If you are struggling with a bruised heart at the moment, hold onto the promise that God is with you.

Second Chances

“Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” - Jonah 3:2

This scripture is a marvelous reminder that God gives us second chances. I am sure that we have all been beneficiaries of a second chance, at some point in our lives, and it is an amazing feeling.

Jonah wisely used his second chance and was obedient to the call that God gave to him; however, he wasn't exactly happy about it. His attitude was quite poor actually, and yet God still dealt with him graciously.

Let us remember that in Jesus Christ, we all have a second chance.

"God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him." - John 3:17

Question: What have you done with your second chances?

"Live as if you were living a second time, and as though you had acted wrongly the first time." - Viktor E. Frankl

I cling to You.

"Because you are my helper, I sing for joy in the shadow of your wings.
I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely" - Psalm 63:7-8

When we reach out to God and cling to him, we must remember that God is also reaching out and holding us at the same time. As a child clings tightly to her mother, she doesn't yet know that it is the strength of the parent that is doing most of the holding. Believing that it is her strength that is making the feeble grip hold, she will soon realise that the overwhelming love of the parent is actually holding her safe and sound.

Those who are weary

"He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength."
- Isaiah 40:28-31

I think that we all know what it feels like to be tired and weak. When we get to this point in our lives it is usually as a result of having expended too much emotional or physical energy.

In today's well-known passage (from Isaiah 40:30) we note that Isaiah also uses the word 'weary.' At first glance we can be excused for thinking it is the same meaning as weakness or tiredness. However, it is a different word, with a different meaning. According to the commentator, Motyer, it means “exhaustion because of the hardness of life.”

Can we relate to that in any way? Have you ever felt exhausted because of the hardness of life? What hope does God give to us?

Action: Read Matthew 11:28-30

T.H.I.N.K about these things

T.H.I.N.K

Alan Redpath, a well-known preacher, belonged to a fellowship group a few years ago where they adopted a simple formula relating to their speaking of any person or subject that was perhaps controversial. This is how their formula went, and it used the acronym "T.H.I.N.K." as it's focal word.

T - Is it true? Is the information I am passing on definitely True?
H - Is it helpful?
I - Is it inspiring?
N - Is it necessary?
K - Is it kind?

Their small group agreed that if what they were about to say did not pass those tests, they would keep their mouths shut! And it worked!

1 Peter 3:10 - For the Scriptures say, “If you want to enjoy life and see many happy days, keep your tongue from speaking evil and your lips from telling lies.

Strengthen by Grace

"It is good for our hearts to be strengthened by grace, not by eating ceremonial foods, which is of no benefit to those who do so." - HEBREWS 13:9

The writer to the Hebrews uses an interesting concept in this chapter when he speaks of our 'hearts being strengthened by grace.' I wonder what he is hinting at?

Is it possible that the believers had become stuck in their belief that certain foods would have spiritual benefits in their lives? And so, he is trying to counter this thought by arguing that our hearts are actually strengthen through the grace of God instead.

What do you think?

A Spiritual Stent

A Stent is a wire-mesh tube that is inserted into a blocked artery with the hope of assisting blood flow. This procedure is especially important for the arteries around the heart, and it can be a life-saving procedure. While this makes sense for physical blockages in our arteries, what can we do when our 'spiritual hearts' are in danger and there seem to blockages in our spiritual lives?

Well, William Temple has this to say: “To worship is to open the heart to the love of God.”

So, he is suggesting that when we gather for worship, we intentionally open our hearts to the work of God's Spirit. This becomes a stent for the blockages in our hearts. What do you make of that?

Jude 1:2 (Message) - Relax, everything’s going to be all right; rest, everything’s coming together; open your hearts, love is on the way!

Walking in Grace

We need a lot of grace at this moment in time. There is so much going on around us, that many of us are tempted to lay down the gift of grace, in exchange for the weapons of hate. If you are looking for a scripture to guide you into the rest of 2025, look no further than 1 Peter 4.

"Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen." - 1 Peter 4:8-11

Thought: What does it mean for us to be faithful stewards of God's grace? Living and walking in Grace is a hard choice, but I really want to stick to this call.

For the wobbly and weak-kneed

"Jesus comes not for the super-spiritual but for the wobbly and the weak-kneed, who know they don’t have it all together, and who are not too proud to accept the handout of amazing grace." - Brennan Manning

I have slowly grown tired of the kind of faith that seeks to glamourize only the 'super-spiritual' Christian leaders. Of course, we can all learn so much from fellow pastors, leaders and colleagues, but nowhere in the gospels does Jesus give acclaim only to the super-spiritual. Jesus welcomes the weak-kneed, and those who feel wobbly. And for that, I am extremely grateful.

A glistening mirror of divinity

Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) is remembered on the 17th of September, and she was indeed a remarkable woman. It is said that kings and queens, bishops and popes, sought the counsel of this women of God.

But the Benedictine nun was perhaps most knowledgeable about admiring and appreciating every creature that God had created. She loved Jesus and saw God's handiwork all around her. Among her most inspirational quotes are the following:

“The Earth sustains humanity. It must not be injured; it must not be destroyed.”
“Every creature is a glittering, glistening mirror of divinity.”
“Creation is the song of God.”

Romans 8:39 - "No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thought: In this season of Creation (Spring in the Southern Hemisphere) let us remember our Creator.

Never ending

"The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease.
Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.
I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will hope in him!”
- Lamentations 3:22-24

There are so many beautiful promises in these 3 verses, and I hope that they encourage you as much as they helped me.

1. God's love is faithful
2. God's love never ends
3. God's mercies also never end
4. Great is God's faithfulness
5. God's mercies begin afresh everyday
6. God is our inheritance
7. We can place our trust in him

Here is the reading from Lamentations from the Complete Jewish Bible:

21 But in my mind I keep returning to something,
something that gives me hope —
22 that the grace of Adonai is not exhausted,
that his compassion has not ended.
23 [On the contrary,] they are new every morning!
How great your faithfulness!
24 Adonai is all I have,” I say;
“therefore I will put my hope in him.

Red Bull - it can give you wings!

The energy drink, Red Bull, boasts that it can 'give you wings' and make you fly through life. Although it is a modern drink, one wonders if John Wesley had something like Red Bull in his day. The reason I say this is because according to biographers, John Wesley rode 60-70 miles per day (on horseback remember), preached 3 sermons a day (on average). It is estimated that he preached close on 42000 sermons in his lifetime.

In his 83rd year, Wesley wrote in his diary: "I am a wonder to myself. I am never tired, either with preaching, writing or travelling."

Do you see what I mean? He must have been sipping some Red Bull on his horse :)

But seriously, the only thing he would put forward as a logical reason for his energy and stamina, would be the 'Grace of God' and the power of the Holy Spirit. You can't keep going like that, without the power of God's supernatural favour and grace.

1 Peter 4:11 If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Thought: Are you relying on your own strength at the moment, or are you trusting in the power of God's spirit? May God grant you his strength and grace today.
