Singing a song

I know that some of us can't sing so well, but that shouldn't prevent us from singing of God's strength and love. You may be wondering, 'what on earth is Delme rambling on about?' Well, let me share this verse with you and I am sure you will understand:

"I will sing of your strength,
in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
my refuge in times of trouble.
O my Strength, I sing praise to you;
you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God." - Psalm 59:16-17

In a very simplistic sense, singing is an expression of something happening in our hearts. The Psalmist invites us to hold onto the faith of our hearts and to offer it to God in song. He teaches us to look beyond our fears and anxieties and to believe in God's great strength. 

I am sure that God is not too worried about what our voices sound like - He just loves to hear us sing!

Singing in the dark

"But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely." - Psalm 59:16-17

You can only sing of God's strength if you have witnessed his saving power at some point. Even though King David was facing one of his sternest tests, he was able to boldly proclaim that he trusted in God to be his fortress and refuge.

Whatever you may be facing at the moment, remember God's great goodness in the past and then trust him for what lies in the future. 

I guess it is sometimes like singing in the dark. We don't sing because we can see all around us - we sing because of who lives inside of us. 

"I will sing of your love" (v.16)

Good reminder

As the year races towards the end we can be overwhelmed with everything that has to happen and is currently on the go. My devotional reading today comes from Psalm 59 (in Our Daily Bread) and it was a timeous reminder of God's STRENGTH and how we can put our lives into God's strong hands.

"But I will sing of your strength,
    in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
    my refuge in times of trouble.

You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
    my God on whom I can rely." - Psalm 59:16-17

Prayer:

Lord, may you be my strength today. I rest in your greatness and not in my weakness. Amen."

Chased by dogs

This afternoon on my run I was chased by dogs, on two separate times. It was fine in the end because the dogs were small enough to out stare (and run), but it would have been interesting if they had been any bigger.

David knew what it was like to be chased by 'dogs', except the dogs that hounded him were actually people. This is what he wrote:

Psalm 59:6 -They come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets.

He also said: "My enemies surround me like a pack of dogs; an evil gang closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and feet." - Psalm 22:16

This last Psalm was of course the Psalm that Jesus recited from the cross. I am sure that Jesus also felt troubled by the 'dogs' of humanity, as they grouped around him snarling and jeering at him.

So the next time you feel that people are coming for you, remember that both Jesus and David understand your situation. Why don't you read Psalm 22 and Psalm 59 to go deeper into this devotion for today?
