You are my hiding place

I have found such comfort in these words over the past few days.

"For you are my hiding place;
you protect me from trouble.
You surround me with songs of victory.

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.
I will advise you and watch over you."
- Psalm 32:7-8

In my mind I see two big ideas that are conveyed to us through the words of this Psalm.

1. We can find shelter, protection and care, in the presence of Jesus.
2. The Lord guides us into paths that are best for us.

Thought:
Which one of these speaks to your situation at the moment?

There is a beautiful song that put these words into music and verse. If you have time, you can listen to it on this platform.

The Lord will guide you

Isaiah 58:11 - "The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail."

There is so much depth to this one verse - it is well worth chewing on for a while and seeing what sticks with you. Could it be that God wants us to remember some of these essential truths:

God will guide us always.

God will satisfy our needs, even when things look bleak around us.

God will strength our frame.

Our lives will become like a garden that has been cared for and is well watered.

Have a blessed day and may these words become true for you.

At the Crossroads

When we reach a crossroads in our lives, we sometimes struggle to know which way to turn. This can be a trying time in our Faith journey, but one which we need to persevere through. At times like this I am reminded of the words of the great hymn Guide me, O Thou Great Jehovah

May these words also offer you some hope and encouragement today.

Guide me, O though Great Jehovah
Pilgrim through this barren land
I am weak, but you are mighty:
Hold me with your powerful hand.

Thought: May the bread of heaven be our food and nourishment during our time in the wilderness.

Remember the God of our Youth

As we remember National Youth Day on the 16th June, let us be reminded of our call to invest in the lives of the younger generation and to offer them the guidance they need. The best gift we can give them is the knowledge of Jesus as their Saviour and Friend. Here are a few passages to spur us on:

Psalm 71:5 - For you have been my hope, Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth.

Psalm 103:5 - who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

Ecclesiastes 4:13 - Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning.

Ecclesiastes 12:1 - Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble.

What 'faith' lessons would you love to pass onto the younger generations?

Guidance and the willingness to act

“Do not ask God for guidance if you aren’t willing to move your feet.” - Anon

So often we are guilty of asking God for the necessary guidance, but then we expect God to airlift us to the finish line. However, this requires no act of faith on our behalf. God may give us the goal, the direction, the guidance, but God expects us to move our feet.

Matthew 14:28-29 - “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

The first step is usually the hardest to take, but from then on, just move one foot in front of the other.

The web of life

Shakespeare once said: "The web of our life is of a mingled yarn, good and ill together..."

The older I get the more I realise this to be so true. The web of our lives is sometimes like a ball of yarn that has got completely mixed up! Trying to unravel the knots in the yarn is almost impossible. Our lives mirror this messy yarn - we have the good, bad and ugly all mixed up together in one. We just pray that God can help us figure things out!

2 Chronicles 14:11O Lord,” he cried out to God, “no one else can help us! Here we are, powerless against this mighty army. Oh, help us, Lord our God! For we trust in you alone to rescue us, and in your name we attack this vast horde."

O God, our help in ages past

"O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home."

These striking words of the first verse of 'O God, Our Help in ages past' (Isaac Watts) remind us that we serve a God who has helped us in the past and he will shelter us from the stormy experiences of the present. What is more is that God continues to guide us until we are safely home in His presence. That is a promise found in many places in the Scriptures.

The final verse of this hymn is almost the same as the first, except for a slight alteration in verse 3. This line states: Be thou our guide while life shall last. I find that this prayer is one that I can relate to at the moment. I need God's guidance in many areas of my life and I trust that while I am alive, God will show me the way.

Psalm 18:6 - In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.

What are the chances?

Today's reflection comes from Iris Gouws - thanks so much for your testimony, Iris.

Thinking back over my life - and yes, I have passed the "three score and ten" as so many of us have, it is quite amazing to look back and see how many times God has undertaken for me and changed things for the better, but also that things I had longed for became a reality in my life, perhaps not as quickly as I wanted things to happen, but looking back I can see God's timing was perfect.

I can remember as a young girl, perhaps 8 or 9 years old, standing on the beach in Natal, arm in arm with my older sister, singing choruses that we had learned in the Methodist church in Stanger during Sunday School.  There is one that I remember so clearly.

Tenderly He watches over me,
every step, every mile of the way.
Like a mother watches o'er her baby
He is with you every hour of the day.
When you're right, when you're wrong,
When you're weak, when you're strong
In your sorrow and your pain,
When you lose or when you gain.
Tenderly He watches over you,
Every step, every mile of the way.

I have to say, that in all of these experiences in my life, the words of the above song hove proven to be true.

Let me give you an example.

When I first started working, my greatest desire was to meet someone, fall in love, get married and start a family (that was the dream most young women had in those days).  I waited and waited and waited, but nothing happened. My two brothers got married, one older and one younger than me, and still no mister right.

Looking back I can now see God's hand in everything. During those years of waiting, my Father passed away. We lived on a farm some 8 kilometres from the nearest town and had to vacate the home where we had spent so many happy years. Just three months prior to his passing, my Father had completed building a house in Stanger for his retirement, so we had a home to move into. My oldest sister was asthmatic and although she was working, was not very strong. My youngest sister was in her final year at school. The responsibility fell on me to help in every way to get resettled in our new home and give my mother the support she needed at that time, although my brothers helped as much as they could, they were working in Durban.

My youngest sister finished her matric and I managed to get her work in the bank where I was working, so the family was now settled.I had tried over the years to get a transfer to Durban which should have been very easy but was never successful.

A year or two after my sister was settled in her work and able to assist with my Mother and older sister, out of the blue I was offered a transfer to Durban which I accepted. Well, that was the start of the changes in my life. Shortly after my transfer I was sent on a course from Durban to Johannesburg for a week where I met the man who was to become my husband. He was sent from Welkom in the Free State by the Mines on a course. After meeting him I told him that I was not interested as I had a friend that meant more to me than anyone, my friend was Jesus. Shortly thereafter he called me and said I have met your friend Jesus. At the age of 33 we got married and it had taken 15 years to fulfil my dream .

During this waiting period the Scripture which had been given to me on no less than 5 occasions from different sources was : Psalm 37 v 4 & 5.  "Delight thyself also in the Lord; and He shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust in Him, and He shall bring it to pass,"

What were the chances of us meeting in the normal course of events ? I see God’s hand in this.

PRAYER:  Father God, thank you for your many blessings.  Help us to always wait for your timing in our lives which is always perfect. Amen.

Wisdom as a Person - a new insight

bible verse, psalm 143:8, bible quote, direction quote, guidance ...
If you enjoy the collection of Proverbs you will note that the flow of chapters 1 to 9 is different from the later Proverbs. In the first 9 chapters, we see that the writer (Solomon?) speaks about wisdom as being an abstract object - almost as a character trait that we all need to get and then hold onto.

However, in the focal point of the first 9 Chapters, Solomon suddenly changes his language and now starts to speak about Wisdom as a PERSON. Now, this is not really a huge jump to make because Wisdom is referred to as 'sophia' in Greek and 'hokmah' in Hebrew - both of these are female personifications. (So ladies you can now joke with us men-folk that you are the truly WISE ones :)

What is more, when we read about this WISDOM, we note the massive parallels with the person of Jesus. The Apostle John wrote about Jesus that "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God!" (John 1). Now this may be a little tricky to understand at first, but very simply, John was reminding us that Jesus was present in the beginning of Creation. From this understanding we get our concept of the Trinity.

Now, as we read Proverbs 8:22-33, we see that Solomon is suggesting the same thing. This person, referred to as Wisdom, could really be referring to Jesus, the Messiah. Take a read of these words and see what you think...

"From the beginning, I was with the Lord.
I was there before he began to create the earth.
At the very first, the Lord gave life to me.

When I was born, there were no oceans
    or springs of water.

My birth was before mountains were formed
or hills were put in place.

It happened long before God
had made the earth or any of its fields
    or even the dust.

I was there when the Lord put the heavens in place
and stretched the sky over the surface of the sea.
I was with him when he placed the clouds in the sky
and created the springs that fill the ocean.
I was there when he set boundaries for the sea
to make it obey him, and when he laid foundations
    to support the earth.
I was right beside the Lord, helping him plan and build.
I made him happy each day, and I was happy at his side.
I was pleased with his world
    and pleased with its people.
Pay attention, my children! Follow my advice,
    and you will be happy.
Listen carefully to my instructions,
    and you will be wise."

Regardless of how we feel about this possible connection with the Christ, Wisdom is a necessity for all of us, especially as we navigate through turbulent waters. Let us turn to the Wisdom of Jesus and also pray for those who lead us through our current Pandemic.
So many people would like to have guidance from God because obviously, if you have a word from God, it's the best possible thing. But they don't relate that to life as a whole. Often they want guidance as a way of opting out of the responsibility of making decisions. Dallas Willard

In God's Hands

 Image result for Psalm 31
As we have come to the end of 2018 and the dawn of 2019, I quickly turned to Psalm 31 to see if there was any message for us from the words of King David. And this is what I discovered - lovely words of renewal and recommitment for each one of us.

"Into your hands I commit my spirit." - v.5

"But I trust in you, Lord;
I say, “You are my God.”

My times are in your hands;" - v.15

"Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope in the Lord." - v.24

I pray that these words will guide you, nourish you and encourage you as you begin the new year. Let us seek to place all "things" into the Hands of the Almighty God.

Looking to the Finger Posts

"Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement." - Charles F. Kettering

Okay, I am going to admit something - I had to google what 'finger posts' are? I know it is terrible of me, but I was a little confused and so I needed to figure it out. I know 'finger posts' as 'sign posts' or 'guide posts', but in essence they are the same thing. Technically a finger post has a few signs (fingers) on the same post and these all point in a different direction - they are usually seen in the UK and Ireland.

Anyway, I am getting distracted. My point relates to the initial quote from Kettering. He makes the observation that any 'failure' we experience is really just a way of pointing us in the right direction. If we believe that God is our GUIDE and that God will lead us where we need to go, then our failures are not fatal and God will still get us home.

I hope this offers you some hope today. Follow the finger posts and see where God is leading you.

Genesis 24:49 - Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; and if not, tell me, so I may know which way to turn.”

The best pathway

The Lord says, "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. Do not be like a senseless horse or mule that needs a bit or bridle to keep it under control." - Psalm 32:8-9

God wants to guide us along the BEST pathway for our lives, but we are sometimes obstinate and 'senseless' like a mule. It is always a challenge to listen out for God's instructions and his commands, but if we realise that God wants the best for us, then perhaps we may be more eager to listen.

When you read Psalm 32, how does it make you feel?
What pathway are you walking on at the moment?
Is is the Best path for you?

When I walk to the edge

"When I walk to the edge
of all the light I have
and take that step into
the darkness of the unknown
I believe one of two things will happen.

There will be something solid for me to stand on
Or I will be taught to fly." - S. Marlin Edges

How do you feel about this poem? I think it is a wonderful statement of Faith - of believing in a God who is gracious and a God who will always lead us into the future with His presence as our guide.

May you step out in faith today and may God provide solid ground for you to walk on OR wings to fly.

1 Timothy 1:15-16 (The Message) - Here’s a word you can take to heart and depend on: Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners. I’m proof—Public Sinner Number One—of someone who could never have made it apart from sheer mercy. And now he shows me off—evidence of his endless patience—to those who are right on the edge of trusting him forever. Deep honour and bright glory to the King of All Time— One God, Immortal, Invisible, ever and always.

Prayer for guidance

I trust that some of us will find this prayer helpful today. Grace.

"Lord, grant that I may always allow myself to be guided by you, always follow your plans, and perfectly accomplish your holy will.
Grant that in all things, great and small, today and all the days of my life, I may do whatever you require of me.
Help me respond to the slightest prompting of your grace, so that I may be your trustworthy instrument for your honour.
May your will be done in time and in eternity by me, in me, and through me.
Amen." St. Teresa of Avila

Go to PLAN B

I went to sleep the other evening with a nicely laid out plan for the next morning. There were a whole lot of things that I was going to get done, but when I woke up everything changed! The problem was that we had no electricity the whole morning – and it wasn’t even our usual time for load shedding! I was deeply frustrated! However, as I began to wipe the sleep out of my eyes, I felt a gentle nudging from God, “Go to Plan B!”

The thing was I didn’t really have a nicely thought out Plan B, so, I was a little apprehensive about listening to the prompting from God. Anyway, I went with the idea and found that Plan B was equally rewarding. I hadn’t planned on it, but it all worked out fine.

Sometimes our lives are a lot like this, aren’t they? We have a great Plan A – it looks wonderful on paper or in our minds, but then something happens to drastically change these plans. So, how then do we respond?

Well, in my opinion, God will always lead us onto another Plan, especially if Plan B will also bring him glory and honour, and if it won’t lead us away from him. God has a plan for our lives - It is a brilliant plan and one that will prosper us and not harm us (Jeremiah 29:11).

Psalm 20:4 - "May he grant your heart’s desires and make all your plans succeed."
