What is God really like?

This question has been on the lips of millions of people over the millennia. And as much as we can delve deeper into this question, the answer is staggeringly simple. 

Jesus said: Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father (John 14:9). 

In other words, if we want to understand who God is, all we need to do is study Jesus. If we can comprehend the nature and 'person' of Jesus, then we will have a best foundation to understand Yahweh. The apostle Paul actually put it like this:

Colossians 1:15: “The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.”

Hebrews 1:3: “The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.”

Thought: If you want to discover what God is really like, please don't look at other people (pastors included) - rather study the life and person of Jesus.

Greater than the angels

The topic of Angels has become quite popular in recent times and of course the Bible refers to angels in many places. In fact, a quick search in BibleGateway will show 290 references to angels. Clearly God used angels as his messengers in many different situations, however the book of Hebrews reminds us that Christ is to be revered more than the angels. 

5 For God never said to any angel what he said to Jesus:
“You are my Son. Today I have become your Father.
God also said, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son.”
6 And when he brought his supreme Son into the world, God said, 
“Let all of God’s angels worship him.” (Hebrews 1)

Angels were seen as messengers of God, but they are never referred to as family - yet, Jesus is called God's Son. In essence, He is both the Message and the Messenger. 

Thought: Let us remember to give thanks for all God has created, but to worship only the Creator!

My old clothes

I have been known to hang onto some of my old clothing until it can't be "saved" anymore. Call me sentimental or just attached to my comfortable clothes, but I don't like throwing these things away. However, there comes a time, when even I have to relent and send my clothes on their merry way. It may take many, many years before this happens, but it ALWAYS happens in the end. 

So, why am I telling you this? Well, because it comes up in the book of Hebrews. The writer recalls a passage from Psalm 102, where the Israelites acknowledged that just as clothes wear out, so the world will also wear out and come to an end.

"You, Master, started it all, laid earth’s foundations,
    then crafted the stars in the sky.
Earth and sky will wear out, but not you;
    they become threadbare like an old coat;
You’ll fold them up like a worn-out cloak,
    and lay them away on the shelf.
But you’ll stay the same, year after year;
    you’ll never fade, you’ll never wear out." - Hebrews 1:12 (Message)

The Good News in this verse lies in the final words, where we are reminded that even though things fade away, Jesus Christ stays the same forever - He will never end.

"You will roll them up like a robe (coat);
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,    and your years will never end." - Hebrews 1:12
