Two oars of the boat

Can you imagine rowing a boat with only one oar? It wouldn't be very helpful, would it?

If you only use the right oar, you go in circles.
If you only use the left oar, you would get the same result.

The best and most effective way to move is to make sure that both oars are working simultaneously. Right and Left oars, moving as one.

Is it also not true when we seek to follow God's commands? Jesus gave us two vital commands to obey - Love God and Love our Neighbour.

Love for God is one of the oars.
Love for our neighbour is the other.

"Jesus replied, “The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. 30 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’31 The second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.” - Mark 12

What is Important?

“If everything is important, then nothing is.” - Patrick Lencioni

I love this quote, because it speaks to my heart. There are so many things that I believe are important, but they can't all be EQUALLY important - it is just not possible. It ties into the old saying, "Jack of all trades, becomes a master of none!" As soon as we try to do everything we end up dropping the ball in some of these same areas. Life is just like that.

So, what are the really important things in your life at the moment? If you are battling to answer the question, then just reflect on where you are spending the majority of your time - that will give you an indicator.

Mark 12:29 - “The most important one (command),” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
