Everything changes so quickly

 

Change is happening all around us and it is so hard to keep up with CHANGE. As the great Philosopher Heraclitus once said:

“Everything changes but change itself. Everything flows and nothing stays the same. You cannot step into the same river twice…”

The gist of this comment is that if you were to jump into a river, then step out of the water onto the bank again, and then plunge in again, you wouldn't be swimming in the same water. The water from your first dip would be downstream already, thus leaving you swimming in new water. That is how quickly CHANGE happens.

So who can we rely on in a world that changes in the blink of an eye? The Bible teaches us that we can rely on the CONSISTENCY and DEPENDABILITY of Jesus. He is the one who never changes.

Hebrews 13:8 - "Jesus Christ is the same, Yesterday, Today and Forever."

The Hill of Ice

Have you ever felt like you are getting somewhere in your life/faith/relationships and then suddenly you slide all the way back to square One? It is almost as if we are climbing a Hill of ice, only to see all our efforts count for zero. If you can relate to this, then you will enjoy this quote from Charles Spurgeon:

"The Christian life is very much like climbing a hill of ice. You cannot slide up. You have to cut every step with an ice axe. Only with incessant labor in cutting and chipping can you make any progress. If you want to know how to backslide, leave off going forward. Cease going upward and you will go downward of necessity. You can never stand still."

Did you notice the part about cutting into the ice and chipping away? That is what our Spiritual journey often entails. In order to consistently move forward we need to make sure that our footholds are strong and dependable. It may not seem like you are gaining much ground, but if you made sure that you are on solid ground, then your direction will always be forward.

"Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit." - Galatians 5:25

Changing weather, changing moods

This weather we are experiencing at the moment is soooo strange. One day it is nice and hot, the next it is raining again. Some mornings I don't even open the curtains expecting sun anymore!
So, I totally understand how people's moods are impacted by the weather and seasons. In truth, S.A.D (seasonal affective disorder) is common in Northern Hemisphere climates, but it could become a real issue in our own country soon.

The challenging thing for 'followers of Jesus' is that we shouldn't let our moods impact upon how we follow Christ. We should follow him, despite how we feel. It is hard to practise, but it is something we should endeavour to live out.
