"Just"

When we ask the boys to do something for us, they love to tell us that they are "just"going to do another thing and then they will do what we ask. So, here is an example:

Q: "Boys, please take your plates to the kitchen."
A: "We are "just" playing - we will do it soon."

Does this sound familiar?
"I will do that important task, but I "just" need to procrastinate a little longer!"

This simple word "just" can also imply spiritual procrastination of dangerous proportions. It can take this form:
I will commit my life to God later - I "just" need to sort my studies out.
I will go back to church - I am "just" so busy at the moment.
I will pray with my kids sometime - the time "just" doesn't seem right.
I would love to read my bible more, but it "just" seems like an effort right now.

What is your "just" excuse at the moment?
Don't you think it is time to "just" stop making excuses?!

I am just asking...

Today

I have been reminded again of the urgency of 'the moment.' It came via a blogpost from Seth Godin. In his post he quotes these monumental words from Martin Luther King Jnr.

"We are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there is such a thing as being too late. Procrastination is still the thief of time. Life often leaves us standing bare, naked, and dejected with a lost opportunity. The tide in the affairs of men does not remain at flood -- it ebbs. We may cry out desperately for time to pause in her passage, but time is adamant to every plea and rushes on. Over the bleached bones and jumbled residues of numerous civilizations are written the pathetic words, "Too late."

Wow, wow, wow!

The Scriptures say this in a similar way:

Hebrews 4:7 - "God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through David, as in the passage already quoted: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

Do it NOW!

Fighting Procrastination

I have spoken to a number of students over the past few weeks and it seems that many people find great excuses NOT to study. When I studied I used to call it "fighting procrastination!" Don't you find it amazing that odd jobs around the house suddenly seem much more inviting, compared with sitting down to learn? The proverbial 'to do' list is a huge temptation and often wins out over the hours of learning.

What happens when we embrace procrastination in other areas of our lives? Does it impact our relationships or even our future? Even worse does it impact our faith and the Church?

We say things like, 'I'll read the Bible tomorrow', but we find the time to read the newspaper from cover to cover or spend time on facebook!
We convince ourselves 'next year I am going to do something radical for God' and before we know it 'next year' is 2015 and not 2010.

Is there something that you are putting off until later? Are you fighting procrastination? If we are, then here's some good advice for us:

“Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today.” - Thomas Jefferson

Psalm 118:24 - "The LORD has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad."

Live for God today!
